Chi di voi mi segue su Instagram @robertoderosa, già saprà che quest’estate ho trascorso parte delle mie vacanze tra Istanbul e Beirut… Ed è proprio della capitale del Libano di cui oggi voglio finalmente parlarvi: una città particolare, complessa e ricca di contrasti.
Innanzitutto, parliamo di come raggiungerla. Io ho scelto Pegasus Airlines, compagnia che vola quotidianamente da Milano e Roma per Beirut con scalo a Istanbul. Comodissimo per visitare entrambe le città, come ho fatto io!

If you follow me on Instagram @robertoderosa, you may already know I spent my summer vacay between Istanbul and Beirut… About this last one, the capital of Lebanon, I want to finally talk to you: a particular and complex city, very rich of contrasts.
First of all, let’s talk about how to reach it. I chose Pegasus Airlines, a company that flies daily from Milan and Rome to Beirut with a stopover in Istanbul. Very convenient to visit both cities, as I did!

Beirut ha fascino davvero particolare, direi unico. La parte storica della città ha subito enormi danni durante gli anni della guerra civile ed è stata in parte ricostruita, ciononostante è rimasto ancora qualche luogo interessante di quelli originari. Ci sono palazzi del periodo ottomano che sono stati restaurati e alcuni quartieri caratteristici con piccole vie piene di vita, negozi e bar. Passeggiando per il centro è facile notare come ci siano palazzi completamente restaurati con a fianco altri ancora completamente bombardati o crivellati dai proiettili. Da non perdere il Gran Serraglio, che oggi ospita il palazzo del governo.

Beirut has a very special charm, I would say unique. The historical part of the city suffered enormous damage during the years of the civil war and was partly rebuilt, nevertheless there are still some interesting original places. There are buildings from the Ottoman period that have been restored and some quaint neighborhoods with small streets full of life, shops and bars. Walking through the center it is easy to notice that there are completely restored buildings side by side others, still completely bombed or riddled with bullets. Do not miss the Grand Serail, which today houses the government building.

Per capire meglio la cultura libanese, merita un visita il Sursock Museum. Proprio adiacente al museo d’arte moderna e contemporanea si trova il ristorante Villa Linda Sursock, dove ogni domenica si tiene il Sunday Buffet… Un appuntamento da non perdere!

To better understand the Lebanese culture, the Sursock Museum is worth a visit. Right next to the modern and contemporary art museum is the Villa Linda Sursock restaurant, where every sunday they held a well-known Sunday Buffet… An event not to be missed!

Tornando ai grandi contrasti architettonici di Beirut, in questa città multi-etnica e multi-religiosa è facile imbattersi in una moschea situata proprio accanto ad una chiesa. Come la splendida moschea Mohammad Al-Amin, la cui cupola turchese è ben visibile in ogni parte del centro storico, costruita proprio a fianco della magnifica cattedrale greco-ortodossa di San Giorgio. Entrambe da visitare assolutamente!

Returning to the great architectural contrasts of Beirut, in this multi-ethnic and multi-religious city it is easy to come across a mosque located right next to a church. Like the majestic Mohammad Al-Amin mosque, whose turquoise dome is clearly visible throughout the historic center, built right next to the magnificent Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. George. Both are a must-visit!

Da non perdere una passeggiata sulla Corniche, il lungomare di Beirut. Partendo da downtown, si devono percorrere circa cinque km (a piedi, in bicicletta oppure sui sui pattini a rotelle, come sono soliti fare i libanesi) per raggiungere uno dei simboli della città, sicuramente il mio preferito. Si tratta degli Scogli dei Piccioni… Ora, ditemi se non sembrano i Faraglioni di Capri!

Don’t miss the Corniche, Beirut’s seafront promenade. Starting from downtown, you have to cover about five kilometers (on foot, by bike or on roller skates, as the Lebanese do) to reach one of the symbols of the city, certainly my favorite. It’s called Pigeons’ Rocks… Now, tell me if they do not look like the Capri’s Faraglioni!

Vi consiglio di arrivare per l’ora del tramonto, in modo da ammirare il sole che scende verso l’orizzonte fino a scomparire proprio dietro agli scogli.

I suggest you to arrive at sunset, in order to admire the sun that goes down to the horizon until disappearing just behind the rocks.

Se avete a disposizione un giorno extra, consiglio di organizzare una gita a Byblos. E’ un’antichissima città situata 40 km a Nord di Beirut, addirittura tra le più antiche al mondo ancora abitata (i primi insediamenti risalgano al 7.000 a.C.) e infatti dichiarata patrimonio mondiale dell’umanità UNESCO. Ha un bellissimo sito archeologico che si affaccia sul mare: consiglio vivamente di organizzare una visita guidata al castello per ascoltare la sua lunga ed incredibile storia.

If you have an extra day, I suggest you organize a trip to Byblos. It is an ancient city located 40 km north of Beirut, among the oldest in the world still inhabited (the first settlements date back to 7,000 BC) and in fact declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a beautiful archaeological site overlooking the sea: I highly recommend to organize a guided tour of the castle to hear its long and magical history.

Durante il mio viaggio a Beirut ho soggiornato all’Hotel Le Bristol, meraviglioso hotel a cinque stelle dove sentirsi coccolati in ogni momento a partire dalla prima colazione in camera!

During my trip to Beirut I stayed at the Hotel Le Bristol, a wonderful five-star hotel where you can feel pampered at any time from breakfast in your room!

Infine una curiosità. I giovani libanesi sono bilingui: parlano benissimo sia l’arabo, la lingua ufficiale, che il francese, la lingua che è diventata più diffusa, ma anche l’inglese. Questo perché prediligono le lingue internazionali, quelle più parlate nel mondo. Relazionarsi e fare amicizia è davvero facile!

Finally a curiosity. The young Lebanese are bilingual: they speak very well both Arabic, the official language, and French, the language that has become more widespread, but also English. This is because they prefer international languages, the most spoken in the world. Relating and making friends is really easy!

Ho appena spuntato una voce della mia bucket list: visitare Doha in Qatar. Poco meno di ventiquattr’ore dopo Ibiza (di cui potete leggere tutta la storia cliccando QUI), sono tornato a Bergamo per un nuovo viaggio insieme a Pegasus Airlines. Questa volta in tutt’altra direzione: il Vicino Oriente.

Abbiamo progettato il nostro viaggio con l’aiuto di 365adventures Qatar, che ci ha aiutato e consigliato i migliori tour per visitare al meglio la città e il deserto nei dintorni.

Cosa ho visto a Doha in Qatar? Appena arrivati il caldo era davvero immenso. Dopo il check-in al Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel ed aver lasciato i bagagli nella nostra meravigliosa junior suite, fuori c’erano 43°C e non potevo non approfittarne per fare un bagno nella magica piscina!

I just marked one item off of my bucket list: visit Doha in Qatar. Less than twenty-four hours after Ibiza (which you can read the whole story of by clicking HERE) I came back to the airport for a new trip together with Pegasus Airlines. This time in a different direction: the Near East.

We designed our trip with the help of 365adventures Qatar, who helped us a lot and recommended the best tours to visit the city and the desert in the proximity.

What did I see in Doh, Qatar? Just arrived, the heat was really intense. After check-in at the Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel and leaving our luggage in our wonderful junior suite, out there were 43°C and I couldn’t stop myself from jumping in the pool!

L’Hotel Souq Waqif si trova nel cuore della città vecchia, nei pressi dell’omonimo Souq Waqif ovvero il mercato. Nel pomeriggio siamo andati a visitarlo e ci siamo persi all’istante tra profumi, spezie, cavalli, cammelli e, soprattutto i miei preferiti, i tappeti. Il vecchio mercato della città è stato restaurato in maniera davvero fedele allo stile originale ed è molto pulito ed ordinato. Ci sono anche tantissimi ristorantini, tutti da provare. Un luogo senz’altro da visitare se si va a Doha, il luogo dove si respira di più la sua essenza.

Souq Waqif Hotel is located in the heart of the old city, near the homonym Souq Waqif a.k.a. the market. In the afternoon we went to visit it and we got instantly lost in perfumes, spices, horses, camels and, above all, my favorites, carpets. The old town market has been restored in a truly faithful way to the original style and is very clean and tidy. There are also plenty of cute restaurants. A place definitely to visit if you go to Doha, the place where you breathe more of its essence.

Siamo poi rientrati al Souq Waqif Hotel e abbiamo raggiunto Al Shurfa Terrace, il ristorante sulla terrazza panoramica, giusto in tempo per gustarci un buon thè alla menta con vista sulla meravigliosa skyline di Doha. Ci siamo fermati a goderci il tramonto e poi ci siamo spostati per la cena in uno degli altri ristoranti dell’hotel, l’Argan. Lì la cucina è marocchina ed è servita con sottofondo di musica tipica!

Mi sono trovato davvero bene in questo hotel: ha sì uno stile moderno, ma un’eleganza tipicamente araba degli arredi che mi ha conquistato.

We then came back to the Souq Waqif Hotel and we reached Al Shurfa Terrace, the restaurant on the rooftop, just in time to enjoy a good mint tea cup with a view of the wonderful Doha skyline. We stopped to enjoy the sunset and then moved for dinner at one of the other hotel’s restaurants, the Argan. There the kitchen is Moroccan and served with a background of typical music!

I really loved the hotel: it has a modern style but a typically Arabian elegance of the furnishings that conquered me.

La mattina successiva ci siamo concessi una deliziosa colazione in camera: un misto di dolce e salato con frutta fresca, toast, uova strapazzate e mini croissant. I piatti erano presentati davvero bene ed erano anche davvero ottimi!

The next morning we had a delicious breakfast in our room: a sweet and salty mixture of fresh fruit, toast, scrambled eggs and mini croissants. The dishes were presented really well and were also really delicious!

Proprio mentre mi trovavo a Doha ha avuto inizio il Ramadan (quest’anno si tiene dal 26 maggio al 24 giugno). Lo stesso giorno avevamo organizzato un safari nel deserto. Qui sotto mi vedete insieme alla nostra guida, Mohammed, che ci ha scarrozzato a bordo del suo fuoristrada su e giù per le scenografiche dune di sabbia. Un’esperienza davvero incredibile!

Just when I was in Doha, Ramadan began (this year is held from May 26th to June 24th). On the same day we had a safari in the desert. Below you will see me along with our guide, Mohammed, who brought us on his off-road vehicle up and down the scenic sand dunes. A truly amazing experience!

Il giorno successivo siamo andati alla scoperta della Doha più moderna, quella dei grattacieli, della Corniche, ovvero la passeggiata di 7 km sul lungomare della Baia di Doha che parte dalla zona del Souq e dal Musero d’Arte Islamica, seguendo tutta la skyline e arrivando fino alla West Bay.

The next day we went to discover the modern side of Doha, the one of the skyscrapers and of the Corniche, the 7km promenade overlooking the Doha Bay from the Souq and the Museum of Islamic Art areas, following the whole skyline and coming down to West Bay.

Grazie a Pegasus Airlines per avermi fatto volare ancora una volta a bordo dei loro aerei, verso una nuova e meravigliosa destinazione!

Thanks to Pegasus Airlines for having made me fly again on board their aircraft, to a new and wonderful destination!

Due delle mete turistiche più affascinanti e lussuose al mondo, quattro giorni ed una macchina fotografica: ecco il mio diario di viaggio a Dubai e Abu Dhabi!

Two of the most fascinating and luxurious destinations in the world, four days and one photo camera: here is my travel diary of Dubai and Abu Dhabi!

Al mio arrivo sono stato accolto dallo splendido staff del Raffles Hotel. Subito sono rimasto a bocca aperta di fronte alla vista panoramica sulla skyline di Dubai al tramonto, dal balcone della mia meravigliosa camera!

Upon my arrival I was greeted by the wonderful staff at Raffles Hotel. Immediately I became speechless in front of the panoramic view of the Dubai skyline at sunset from the balcony of my beautiful room!

Il mattino successivo, ovvero il primo dei miei quattro giorni a Dubai, dopo essermi concesso una abbondante colazione a base di ottima frutta fresca sono partito alla scoperta della città.

The next morning, the true first of my four days in Dubai, after a huge breakfast with excellent fresh fruit I left to explore the city.

Nella mattinata ho visitato Dubai Marina, la zona cosiddetta nuova della città dove ci sono le isole che formano una palma. In realtà tutto a Dubai è di recente costruzione, d’altronde basti pensare che gli Emirati Arabi Uniti sono nati neanche cinquant’anni fa. Il mare è di un turchese bellissimo e fa un certo effetto vedere dalla spiaggia stagliarsi gli altissimi grattacieli.
Sono poi ritornato nella zona più centrale di Dubai, dove c’era anche l’Hotel. Immancabile una visita al Dubai Mall, il più grande centro commerciale del mondo. Per la cena vi consiglio di rimanere in zona: il ristorante fusion Social House prepara ottimi piatti gluten free (ma non solo). Chiedete un tavolo all’esterno: potrete godervi lo spettacolo delle fontane del Mall a pochi passi!
Il mio secondo giorno l’ho trascorso fuori Dubai: non potevo perdere l’opportunità di visitare anche Abu Dhabi, la capitale degli Emirati Arabi, che dista appena un’ora e mezza di taxi!

In the morning I visited Dubai Marina, the so-called new area of the city where there are the islands that form a palm tree. In fact everything in Dubai is newly built, moreover considering that the UAE were born neither fifty years ago. The sea is a beautiful turquoise color and it is quite unusual to see from the beach the skyscrapers standing out.
Then I returned in the most central area of Dubai, where there was also my Hotel. I visited the Dubai Mall, the largest mall in the world. For dinner I recommend you stay in the area: the fusion restaurant Social House prepares delicious gluten free dishes (but not only). Ask for a table outside: you can enjoy the spectacle of the fountain sof the Mall a few steps behind!
The second day I went outside Dubai: I could not miss the opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, which is just an hour and a half away by taxi.

La Grande Moschea Sheikh Zayed è di una bellezza che lascia letteralmente senza fiato. Interamente bianca intonsa all’esterno, eccetto per le colonne dorate; con marmi, ori e decorazioni sfarzose all’interno, che evidenziano ancora di più la maestosità della struttura. Ovviamente non potevo perdere l’occasione di scattare un mucchio di fotografie.
Passiamo ora al mio terzo giorno a Dubai, dove mi sono spostato allo Shangri-La Hotel. La vista da’ direttamente sul Burj Khalifa, di oltre 800 metri di altezza: impossibile non lasciarsi attrarre dal grattacielo più alto mai realizzato nella storia!

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a beauty that literally takes your breath away. Completely untouched white outside, except for the golden columns; with marble, gold and sumptuous decorations inside, that highlight more the majesty of the structure. Of course I could not miss the chance to shoot a bunch of photographs.
Now to my third day in Dubai, where I moved to the Shangri-La Hotel. The view goes directly in the direction of the Burj Khalifa, a building more than 800 meters high: impossible not to be attracted by the tallest skyscraper ever built in the history!

Marzo è tra i mesi migliori per visitare Dubai e gli Emirati Arabi in quanto le temperature oscillano tra i 20 e i 30° C. Nel periodo da giugno a settembre, invece, fa decisamente troppo caldo (si arriva tranquillamente ai 50° C). E’ stato piacevole fuggire dall’inverno italiano in un luogo con una temperatura così piacevole.
Ho volato dall’Italia con Pegasus Airlines, facendo un breve e comodo scalo a Istanbul che ha spezzato il lungo volo aereo. Non è la prima volta che volo con questa compagnia e mi sono trovato benissimo: permette di volare per Dubai e per altre 100 mete in giro per il mondo!

March is one of the best months to visit Dubai and the UAE as temperatures fluctuate between 20 and 30° C. In the period from June to September, however, it is far too hot (they arrive at 50° C). It has been nice to get away from the Italian winter to a place with such a nice temperature.
I flew from Italy with Pegasus Airlines, doing a quick and convenient stopover in Istanbul. Not the first time I fly with this company and everything went very well: you can fly to Dubai and other 100 destinations around the world!
